The UT Twin48 is a remarkable recreation of two of the most revered classic tube microphone designs. The originals from the late ’40s and ’50s have appeared on countless iconic recordings. United Studio Technologies has brought both legendary designs together in a single microphone, refined for modern studios while staying true to their historic character.
A tube chosen for true vintage tone
To deliver authentic, powerful tube sound, the UT Twin48 uses a carefully selected new old stock EF86 pentode vacuum tube in its amplifier stage—the last living descendant of the tube used in the originals. Unlike modern dual-triode tubes, the pentode’s harmonic character produces a bolder, richer sound with exceptional depth and complexity.
The result is a microphone that captures the spirit of these classics with stunning fidelity—now available in both of their original forms in one versatile design.
Twin Mode Operation
The UT Twin48 offers more than just pattern selection—it gives you access to two distinct classic microphone behaviors.
Although both the 47- and 48-style microphones use cardioid operation, they achieve it in different ways, creating subtle tonal differences and slightly different polar patterns. For the first time ever, both approaches are available in a single microphone.
- 47 Mode offers 47 Cardioid and Omni
- 48 Mode offers 48 Cardioid and Figure-of-8
Each cardioid mode has its own sonic personality:
47 Cardioid
Uses True Cardioid operation, where the rear diaphragm is decoupled. This creates a louder, more sensitive sound with increased top-end detail and a sense of openness.
48 Cardioid
Uses Active Cardioid, where the rear diaphragm is polarized at the same voltage as the backplate. The result is a warmer, more intimate tone with slightly lower sensitivity and a more focused sound.
Engineers often prefer the 48 Cardioid for its warmth and intimacy, while others gravitate toward the 47 Cardioid for its larger, more open character. With the UT Twin48, you can choose the sound that best flatters each source—whether you’re recording vocals, adding atmosphere to horns, or capturing clean, articulate strings and brass from a single mic.
Custom United UT K48 Capsule
At the heart of the UT Twin48 is the custom-made UT K48 capsule, a historically correct single-backplate, dual-diaphragm design. Each capsule is assembled in a laboratory clean-room environment, then 24k gold-sputtered on 6-micron Mylar.
We optimized this for 60V operation and tuned it to match the smooth, musical response of the originals, while avoiding common reproduction issues like resonances, harshness, or excessive brightness.
Custom United Transformers
We build the custom-wound, U.S.-made UT-BV8 transformer to original Braunbuch specifications, using the same lamination style as the classic parts. We carefully measured each design from a golden specimen of the original German transformer.
To further improve performance, we use high-nickel alloy laminations and a copper Faraday shield to reduce radio-frequency interference (RFI). We could have chosen a smaller, less expensive transformer—but we refused to compromise.
High-Performance Power Supply
A tube microphone is only as good as its power supply, so we treated this as a critical part of the design.
The UT Twin48 features a fully discrete power supply with individually isolated rails for filament, B+, and polarization voltages. It uses a custom U.S.-made discrete regulator from Sparkos Laboratories for filament voltage, along with fully discrete Zener diode regulation for the high-voltage rails—ensuring clean, reliable, maintenance-free operation with no calibration required.
Throughout the supply, we use U.S.-made PRP resistors, long-life electrolytic capacitors, and an oversized traditional linear frame-mounted transformer.
To minimize noise even further, we avoided IC regulators, generic components, and switch-mode power transformers. The power supply also includes both an inline EMI/RFI AC input filter. The selectable RF filter on the audio output, is conveniently controlled from the front panel.
Because cable quality matters too, we include the excellent Sommer Octave 7-conductor cable from Germany. Optimized specifically for the UT Twin48.

Every detail of the UT Twin48 was designed to make it a standout microphone worthy of any serious studio. Premium and custom-made components are used throughout, including audiophile-grade polystyrene, tantalum, and film capacitors, plus U.S.-made PRP thin-film resistors.
We’ve taken every possible step to reduce noise, improve RFI rejection, and ensure the UT Twin48 delivers boutique-level sound built for long-term reliability.
Also included is a vintage-inspired briefcase, custom-fit to protect the microphone and all accessories.
From the Sommer Octave 7-pin cable to the final assembly and testing completed in the USA at United’s base of operations, no detail has been overlooked. The Twin48 is more than an exceptional addition to any microphone locker—it’s a powerful creative tool for the most demanding engineers.
