The UT Vintage87 brings the sound and character of one of the most sought-after microphone designs ever made to more creators.
It uses the same component quality and build standard as the UT Twin87, but with a simplified, fixed true-cardioid design. We removed features that many users do not need, and we did not make any other cost-cutting changes. As a result, the UT Vintage87 delivers reliable, immediate results every time.
Built for Pure Performance
United equipped the UT Vintage87 with a large-core, custom-wound, U.S.-made output transformer. In addition, the microphone uses United’s custom-made 24k gold-sputtered K87-style capsule, plus carefully selected premium parts, including polystyrene, tantalum, multilayer ceramic, and WIMA film capacitors, metal and carbon film resistors, and hand-selected transistors.
Therefore, you get the legendary tone heard on favorite records and films, but without the legendary price.
Custom UT-K87 Capsule
To match the strong, balanced, and versatile sound of the classic design, United created its own K87-style capsule. This capsule uses a dual diaphragm and single backplate construction for efficient, uncompromising performance.
Moreover, United precision-machined the capsule from brass and skinned it with 6-micron Japanese PET film. The membrane also receives a 24k gold sputter finish. Finally, the capsules are assembled in a laboratory clean-room environment.
Custom United Transformer
United studied many versions of the original German output transformer used in this microphone family. They drew special inspiration from older, larger-frame designs. However, they also knew that size could create limits.
So, United developed its own custom-wound transformer with nearly four times the metal mass found in many “87-style” microphones. This design helps prevent bottlenecks and weak links. It also preserves the signal as it leaves the microphone and travels through long cable runs.
As a result, the transformer delivers an open sound, high headroom, and clear three-dimensional detail. It also handles low frequencies without restriction.
Clean, Direct Circuit Design
The UT Vintage87 leaves out the original pattern-select circuitry. That choice creates a hotter, cleaner, and more direct true-cardioid response.
Meanwhile, a switchable output filter helps block RF and EM interference for stable performance.
Timeless, Not Old
In the UT Vintage87, “Vintage” means timeless. It does not mean outdated.
Because it builds on the R&D behind the UT Twin87, the UT Vintage87 meets a timeless standard for classic sound. It also includes many high-end components more often found in boutique microphones. Therefore, more creators can access one of the world’s most respected microphone styles.
